Some remarkable claims have been made about a brand of liquid vitamins recently. They were hailed as the latest miracle breakthrough in dietary supplement history.

One company had such amazing claims in their advertising that we wondered how they could legally say such things. As it turned out, they couldn't. The FTC filed an action against them to stop their unsubstantiated claims.

Mystery solved. There was no miracle breakthrough. This does not mean liquid vitamins are "bad" at all. They are a good product. It simply means they are not the incredible medical "miracle" that a few sellers hyped them to be.

One of the positive qualities of liquids is that they are easier to take for people who have trouble swallowing pills. We know one senior citizen who can't take pills. She likes the Source of Life brand of liquid vitamins. There are many others to choose from but she likes that one the best.

One of the potential drawbacks of some liquids is that when they enter the stomach and are subjected to stomach acids, some of the nutrients may be destroyed before they can reach the upper intestines where they are best absorbed.

Some vitamin tablets on the other hand, not many but a few, are in a delivery system that lasts until it reaches the upper intestines and supplies the nutrients to the body's optimal absorption point. This delivery system is called enteric coating. Check your vitamin tablet and see if it has this coating or not. Most do not.

Another drawback of some liquids is that they can't contain more than negligible amounts of enzymes. Enzymes are important to your health. To be fair, it is also true that some very cheap, low quality supermarket brand vitamin pills fall apart in the stomach and don't reach the upper intestine intact either. Or, they are the opposite, and are so hard they don't dissolve at all, passing through the body with the brand name still painted on their rock-like surface.

Some nutritionists say that the best way to be sure your body actually absorbs most of the nutrients you are paying for is to buy a high quality vitamin pill with an enteric coating.

Enteric coating is used in pharmaceutical tablets for medicines. This is a carefully designed delivery system. One that carries the nutraceutical ingredients right to the walls of the upper intestine. That is where they are best absorbed through the lining and into the bloodstream.

If this fails to happen, there is a possibility your body may not absorb or benefit from a great percentage of the vitamins you paid for. You might be wasting your money, and possibly putting your health at risk, and all the while not knowing.
